Pere Mata Institute University Psychiatric Hospital

Pere Mata Institute University Psychiatric Hospital

Alongside its healthcare functions, the hospital plays a major role in and bases its strategy for the future on teaching, training and research.

The Pere Mata Institute runs a network of publicly owned facilities, providing everything from specialist services in the outpatient network for adults, children and young people under 18 to hospitalization facilities and other areas of specialization. Its purpose is to provide the region with comprehensive, integrated care in the fields of mental health, disability, geriatrics and social health services - all of which have made it a benchmark centre in community care.

It manages the mental healthcare facilities of the Camp de Tarragona and Terres de l'Ebre regions, including:

  • Adult mental health centres
  • Children and young people's mental health centres
  • Individualized service plans
  • Emergencies
  • Hospitalization
  • Day centres
  • Integrated primary assessment team for cognitive disorders
  • Central eating disorder unit
  • Hospital detoxification unit

Research and training: key components

The centre's professionals carry out basic, clinical and epidemiological research work financed by public tenders or the institute's own resources. Its researchers also work in the research units of the Pere Virgili Institute for Health Research and Sant Joan Hospital in Reus.

The University Psychiatric Hospital provides specific training in research, including a very well received introductory course in research and a research-based master's programme.

The Pere Mata Institute is a university hospital with a teaching unit belonging to the Faculty of Medicine of Rovira i Virgili University (URV), which provides both undergraduate and postgraduate training. It also offers in-service training, psychotherapy training and quarterly training seminars.
