The Mediterranean Office for Youth (MOY) lauded the excellence of the URV’s international master’s and doctoral programs, which promote exchanges between 16 member countries of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM). The MOY awarded the program the seal of excellence as well as a package of scholarships for international master’s programs which include obligatory exchanges within the 16 UfM member countries. The Master’s in Euro-Mediterranean Relations (RELMED) is a joint international degree offered by the URV. The preregistration period for the degree has already begun. The RELMED was created in order to offer advanced courses on issues related to the main areas of cooperation in research and technology within the Union for the Mediterranean.

The Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre (CTTi) of the URV Foundation has implemented and applied an R&D&i Integrated Quality Management System which provides added value to the management of technology transfer projects conducted by researchers at the URV. The centre – one of the structures which comprises the knowledge transfer system of the Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia − continues to be the only public technology transfer centre in Spain to be awarded this quality certification.

Francesc Díaz and Òscar Pàmies, lecturers in the URV’s Faculty of Chemistry and Anthony Pym, a lecturer in the Faculty of Letters, have been recognized by the Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA) within its Academia program. Seven URV lecturers have now been honoured by the program: two in 2008, Josep Domingo Ferrer and Benjamín Iñiguez Nicolau from the School of Engineering; two in 2009, Francesc Medina from the University School of Chemical Engineering and Montserrat Diéguez from the Faculty of Chemistry; and these three in 2010, who have enjoyed the advantages of the program since 1 January.

This Tuesday the Minister of Education, Ángel Gabilondo, presided over the signing of the membership agreement for inclusion in the CEI network of universities selected as Campuses of International Excellence. The URV was responsible for one of the 23 projects recognized as Campuses of Excellence in the programme’s two calls for proposals.

Nineteen scientists at Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and two researchers from Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia (CEICS) institutes have made the list of the best Spanish researchers in the fields of chemistry, information technology, physics, health sciences, food science and technology, biology and materials science. The list of experts is based on the “h-index”, which evaluates the impact of researchers in the scientific community.

The URV Senate has approved participation in the network of Spanish universities recognised as Campuses of International Excellence (REDCEI). Recognition of the Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia as a regional CEI (CEIR) led to the inclusion of the URV in the network.

Coinciding with the event celebrating the recognition of the CEICS project as a Campus of International Excellence with European Regional scope, a grant of four million euros for the project was announced this Tuesday. The funding is provided through the INNOCAMPUS project linked to the CEI call for proposals sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Innovation. The project involves the development of Scientific and Technical Resource Services (SRCiT) in the area of molecular biology and the –omic sciences. In total, through the two calls for proposals, the CEICS has received a total of 12.6 million euros.

With the resolution of the second Campus of International Excellence (CEI) call for proposals, the international committee that has monitored and evaluated the projects presented to the Ministry of Education considers the network of universities distinguished for their excellence “almost complete”. From this point on, only “exceptional” projects will be eligible to join this elite group of universities with international scope and visibility.

The Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia (CEICS) was one of the projects selected this year by the Ministry of Education in the 2010 Campus of International Excellence call for proposals. The proposal presented by Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and some one hundred affiliated institutions was recognized as a “Campus of International Excellence” in the regional excellence category. The project will receive three million euros for the development of its programmes.
