During 2012, the URV and the institutes and research centres that make up the Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia (CEICS) published 1,145 scientific articles, 445 of which involved collaboration with researchers from other countries.

The researchers Carmen Claver and Josep Domingo-Ferrer have been appointed members of the Academia Europaea, a European non-governmental scientific organisation founded in 1988. Its members are scientists and academics who aim to promote learning, education and research.

The aim of the forum is to boost the innovative capacities of the southern regions of Catalonia. The forum proper will take place on 26 and 27 of November in Reus and Tarragona, although during the month leading up to the event there will be a series of activities related to the innovative capacities of the participants. The forum will be the first of a series of events and actions aimed at positioning the region as a leading international innovation hub for Horizon 2020.

Establishing European doctoral networks and promoting doctoral candidates as an added value for knowledge transfer in the workplace are key elements in defining the profile of new doctoral programmes. The need to break away from isolated education, and to promote doctoral students as a differentiating factor for businesses were some of the conclusions of the first day of the CEICS forum.

Attendees at the event, mainly URV researchers, learned firsthand how European doctoral programmes are structured. They were also able to take part in workshops on chemistry and energy, nutrition and health, oenology, tourism, and archaeology and prehistory, the strategic focus areas of the CEICS.

On 9, 10, and 11 November, six scientific conferences will be held in the areas of specialization of the Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia (CEICS): chemistry, nutrition and health, wine, tourism, classical archaeology and prehistory. Discussion at the seminars will address the present situation and future outlook for each of the areas as well as research being conducted in these fields worldwide. At the same time, members of the CEICS will present ongoing research projects at the campus as well as projects led by partners. The first CEICS Forum will dedicate one seminar to addressing changes in doctoral education. The business and international issues councils will also meet at the event and a general meeting will be held. The main event of this first CEICS Forum will be the official conclusion of the International Year of Chemistry. More than a hundred partners and experts from Spain and abroad will participate in the Forum.

To date the CEICS, with the organizational backing of Rovira i Virgili University, has received 19 million euros in funding to consolidate the project. The Ministry of Education has decided to grant five million euros in additional funding to the Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia project – a project coordinated and supported by the URV – via the 2011 Excellence Sub-Programme. The CEICS’s success in receiving funding from the ministry indicates the strength and excellent overall assessment of the project.

The Fundació Caixa Tarragona of CatalunyaCaixa has earmarked a million euros toward this ambitious grants programme. Sixteen grants will be awarded, corresponding to four of the five areas of specialization of the Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia (CEICS) and each beneficiary will be eligible to receive his or her grant for a maximum of 48 months. Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and the Fundació Caixa Tarragona of CatalunyaCaixa have signed a collaboration agreement to create an ambitious grants programme for doctoral research and education. The goal of the agreement is to promote the attraction of talent and research to the Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia in the areas of nutrition and health, heritage and culture, chemistry and energy, and tourism and leisure.
