Nick Ashton

Curator of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Collections. The British Museum.

Dr Nick Ashton has worked at the British Museum for over 25 years in Palaeolithic archaeology. He has directed and published excavations at the British Lower Palaeolithic sites of High Lodge, Barnham, Elveden and Hoxne. More recently he has directed excavations at the 800,000 year old site of Happisburgh, which was published in Nature in 2010. He has also published extensively in a range of international journals on the earliest occupation of northern Europe, early human habitats and the effects on human populations from Britain's development as an island during the late Middle Pleistocene. Recently he has been involved with Rovira i Virgili University of Tarragona on the study of the dispersal of early humans from southern to northern Europe. He is currently deputy director of the Ancient Human Occupation of Britain (AHOB) Project.
