During 2012, the URV and the institutes and research centres that make up the Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia (CEICS) published 1,145 scientific articles, 445 of which involved collaboration with researchers from other countries.

“Nanodaggers” against bacteria

Natural structures can have quite exceptional properties. Some surfaces are highly efficient at repelling water – hydrophobic surfaces – and some insects are so good at cleaning themselves that they cannot be contaminated by such particles as dust, spores or bacteria. And it has now been discovered that the wings of some insects such as the cicada have another property: they are lethal to such gram negative bacteria as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common bacteria that can cause diseases in plants animals and humans.

The results of the DEMÉTER project will help combat the effects of climate change on viticulture

For the last four years studies have been carried out to develop the scientific and technological knowledge that will be needed to adapt viticulture and oenology to the new conditions generated by climate change and to mitigate its effects. 26 companies and 31 research groups have participated in the CENIT DEMÉTER project coordinated by Torres. Three of these research groups are headed by URV researchers: Albert Mas, who has led research into yeast; Albert Bordons, who has led research into lactic bacteria; and Fernando Zamora, who has led research into cava. The project has also featured the participation of INCAVI i Juvé i Camps, a company affiliated to the Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia (CEICS).

The URV takes part in the European programme Clean Space

The URV group Physics and Crystallography of Materials and Nanomaterials is taking part in Clean Space, a programme that is designing a new laser to clean up space. The aim of this research programme is to design a new, extremely powerful pulsed laser which will be able to eliminate space junk and debris. It is a joint project between companies and research groups from four European countries.

Carmen Claver and Josep Domingo appointed members of the Academia Europaea

The researchers Carmen Claver and Josep Domingo-Ferrer have been appointed members of the Academia Europaea, a European non-governmental scientific organisation founded in 1988. Its members are scientists and academics who aim to promote learning, education and research.
