Joan XXIII University Hospital in Tarragona is a Catalan Health Institute centre offering 36 services, some of which have garnered recognition as leaders in the province. Over the course of a single year the hospital discharges 22,000 patients, performs 14,000 surgeries and handles over 222,000 outpatient visits.
A single site offers first-class healthcare, a wide range of teaching activities and quality research. The teaching unit of Joan XXIII Hospital is one of the two hospital teaching units of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Rovira i Virgili University (URV), along with Sant Joan Hospital in Reus.
Undergraduate and postgraduate training
The teaching unit of Joan XXIII University Hospital in Tarragona offers the following courses:
- The second cycle of the Bachelor's in Medicine programme and practical credits in first cycle studies in pathological anatomy and radiology
- Practical credits for the Diploma in Human Nutrition and Dietetics
- Practical and theoretical-practical credits for the Diploma in Physiotherapy
Master's and doctoral programmes
The hospital is accredited to teach in 20 different speciality areas and currently has about a hundred residents. Training placements are also arranged with residents in other centres, both in Spain and abroad.
In the field of nursing the hospital cooperates with other healthcare organizations for the in-service training of professionals.
Vocational training schools
The hospital has signed collaboration agreements with vocational training centres in the areas of auxiliary nursing, specialized healthcare documentation, technical laboratory work, pathological anatomy and radiology.
Specialist healthcare training
The hospital manages research through the Pere Virgili Institute for Health Research (IISPV).
Research activities focus on eight areas with a total of eleven different groups working among them. The groups are organized in consolidated structures such as computer networks or CYBER groups, and include emerging groups with great competitive potential. The research structure is supported by the hospital's own services (biobank unit, central laboratory services, etc.) as well as by central IISPV structures.
