E2Plus is a business which arose from the Rovira i Virgili University (URV) Department of Mechanical Engineering to operate in the sector of renewable energies and energy efficiency. The company’s efforts will be directed towards improving energy use and protecting the environment through new technologies and the more efficient use of natural resources. E2Plus will pursue this goal through cooperation between the public and private sectors in projects, design and technical consulting services for local companies as well as for businesses, associations and universities internationally.

Catalonia leads the nation with 12 of the 22 candidacies for the Severo Ochoa award for scientific excellence. This distinction is awarded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and this is year marks the first year it will be granted.

The Fundació Caixa Tarragona of CatalunyaCaixa has earmarked a million euros toward this ambitious grants programme. Sixteen grants will be awarded, corresponding to four of the five areas of specialization of the Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia (CEICS) and each beneficiary will be eligible to receive his or her grant for a maximum of 48 months. Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and the Fundació Caixa Tarragona of CatalunyaCaixa have signed a collaboration agreement to create an ambitious grants programme for doctoral research and education. The goal of the agreement is to promote the attraction of talent and research to the Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia in the areas of nutrition and health, heritage and culture, chemistry and energy, and tourism and leisure.

The first CEICS-URV Summer Science Campus was attended by 60 students from high schools from all over Spain who had the opportunity to participate in scientific workshops in the fields of chemistry and classical archaeology. Both the students and the coordinators of the workshops were satisfied with the experience, which was created to foster an interest in the sciences in young men and women in their last year of secondary school or first year of upper-secondary school.

The Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia (CEICS) and the UniCat Cluster of Excellence in Berlin signed their first collaboration and exchange agreement this July. The agreement defines the framework for the exchange of postgraduate students between the institutions, especially doctoral students at BIG-NSE (the UniCat doctoral school) and those from Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and the Chemical Research Institute of Catalonia (ICIQ).

The Rovira i Virgili University (URV) 2010 Report on Scientific Visibility indicates that the university has achieved a strong position among the national and international scientific community. Sources for the 2010 Report on Scientific Visibility include the Web of Knowledge (WoK), a web-based platform which provides access to bibliographic, citation and reference databases for publications across the world in various fields; the impact indices of Spanish social, legal and humanities journals (IN-REGUERAS, IN-RECJ and IN-RECH, published by the EC-3 research group of the University of Granada) and URV data.

The Physics and Crystallography of Materials and Nanomaterials group (FiCMA-FiCNA) at the Research Centre for Engineering of Materials and Micro/Nanosystems (EMaS) of Rovira i Virgili University (URV) is taking part in a EU programme called CLEAN SPACE which aims to design a new high-power pulsed laser which will be able to eliminate space junk and debris.

An informative chat about chemistry and science given by a researcher from the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ), Javier de Mendoza, served as the springboard for the first CEICS Summer Science Campus taking place in Tarragona until 30 July. Thirty students from all over Spain have already begun to participate in the science workshops in the areas of chemistry and classical archaeology.

The two organizations will collaborate to jointly fund an aid programme for scientific personnel in training to help them complete master's degree and doctoral programmes at the URV. Both institutions will participate in the study programmes and, specifically, both will be involved in the supervision of doctoral theses of mutual interest. Six grants will be available for the development of doctoral theses.

The Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia (CEICS) will be one of twenty Campuses of International Excellence in Spain to hold a Summer Science Campus. The Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education, with the support of the La Caixa Social Project Fund, are sponsoring the second annual Summer Science Campus Programme. The programme is for students in their fourth year of compulsory secondary school and first year of voluntary secondary school (4th year ESO and 1st year Bachillerato). The CEICS Science Campus will be organized by Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and aims to encourage students’ scientific interest. In order to meet this objective, the university has organized four research projects divided into two sections with 30 students taking part in each section. Students will stay in Tarragona for a 14 day period in the month of July.
