Bayer and Rovira i Virgili University sign an agreement to promote health research
The two institutions will offer a prize of 10,000 euros for research in the fields of cerebrovascular diseases, macular degeneration and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Energy Efficiency Plus launched, a creative enterprise in energy efficiency innovation
E2Plus is a business which arose from the Rovira i Virgili University (URV) Department of Mechanical Engineering to operate in the sector of renewable energies and energy efficiency. The company’s efforts will be directed towards improving energy use and protecting the environment through new technologies and the more efficient use of natural resources. E2Plus will pursue this goal through cooperation between the public and private sectors in projects, design and technical consulting services for local companies as well as for businesses, associations and universities internationally.

ICIQ is one of 22 research institutes to receive the Severo Ochoa award
Catalonia leads the nation with 12 of the 22 candidacies for the Severo Ochoa award for scientific excellence. This distinction is awarded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and this is year marks the first year it will be granted.

CEICS and UniCat Cluster of Excellence in Berlin sign agreement to start joint projects and exchange programmes
The Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia (CEICS) and the UniCat Cluster of Excellence in Berlin signed their first collaboration and exchange agreement this July. The agreement defines the framework for the exchange of postgraduate students between the institutions, especially doctoral students at BIG-NSE (the UniCat doctoral school) and those from Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and the Chemical Research Institute of Catalonia (ICIQ).

The URV participates in designing a laser to clean space
The Physics and Crystallography of Materials and Nanomaterials group (FiCMA-FiCNA) at the Research Centre for Engineering of Materials and Micro/Nanosystems (EMaS) of Rovira i Virgili University (URV) is taking part in a EU programme called CLEAN SPACE which aims to design a new high-power pulsed laser which will be able to eliminate space junk and debris.

The URV and ICIQ launch an aid programme to stimulate scientific careers
The two organizations will collaborate to jointly fund an aid programme for scientific personnel in training to help them complete master's degree and doctoral programmes at the URV. Both institutions will participate in the study programmes and, specifically, both will be involved in the supervision of doctoral theses of mutual interest. Six grants will be available for the development of doctoral theses.

URV research reveals mechanisms which greatly influence the lifespan of organic solar cells
In the field of flexible electronics, a great deal of effort is currently being focused on research into solar cells manufactured with organic materials and some very interesting results have been achieved. One of the primary limiting factors of these devices is the instability of the active layers, which can negatively affect electronic output and reduce efficiency.

The State Department of Climatic Change has resolved to grant Spain’s support to IREC’s project "ZÈFIR" in the European call of Program NER 300.
The State Department of Climatic Change has resolved to grant Spain’s support to IREC’s project “ZÈFIR Floating Med Wind Plant”, of floating offshore wind turbines, in the European call of Program NER 300. The project has obtained the highest score of a list of 16 submitted proposals. The project, which is part of the Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia (CEICS), will be sent to the European Investment Bank EIB, with Spain’s support, following the established process in the mentioned call, to compete with the rest of proposals sent by the other State Members of the EU.

Jairton Dupont, one of the most influential scientists in the world, to be a visiting professor at the URV
The Brazilian chemist Jairton Dupont, one of the one hundred most influential scientists in the world according to the Web of Science, will be a visiting professor at the URV Department of Physical and Inorganic Chemistry for three months. His involvement with the university has included participation in discussions related to different catalysis projects and giving a seminar for students enrolled in the Master’s in Synthesis and Catalysis program.

The URV and Repsol describe their experiences as research partners during a visit to Finland
At the end of February, the European University Association (EUA) hosted an event to allow universities to exchange their experiences of innovative practices in the process of modernization in Tampere Finland. The meeting was called “Sharing Innovating Practices in University Modernisation”. The URV and Repsol were invited to present their experiences at the workshop as partners in the field of research through a presentation entitled: “Collaborative research with industry: A long partnership experience with a large company”.
