The chemical industry is one of the most important economic sectors in the Tarragona region and in the European Union as a whole. The Tarragona petrochemical industrial estate is considered the primary chemical hub in southern Europe and the Mediterranean with more than one million square metres are dedicated to companies in the sector in the counties that make up the province of Tarragona alone. The chemical industry directly employs approximately 150,000 workers in Catalonia and is responsible for providing over two million jobs throughout the European Union.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students at the Campus of International Excellence Southern Catalonia (CEICS) already have the opportunity to gain work experience in some of the leading companies in Tarragona's petrochemical industrial estate during their studies.

Working in companies or research centres and institutes

Working in one of these companies constitutes an excellent employment opportunity, allowing students to gain valuable experience while studying at the CEICS. Many of these companies are members of the Chemical Business Association of Tarragona (AEQT) and many of the chemical companies have contacts and agreements with the campus research structure.

Another employment option is in the area of research at the university, working at the research centres and institutes that make up the CEICS. The campus research structures have already set up a job bank students can access if they meet the requirements of the positions announced there.

Future employment can also be found in the creation of a technology-based company. To date three chemical companies have arisen from the university with the participation of lecturers and young researchers.
